The Oswego State men's basketball team captured its second win in as many days to earn sole control of the SUNYAC standings with a 72-65 triumph over the Plattsburgh Cardinals at Max Ziel Gymnasium on Saturday. Captain Chad Burridge led the Lakers with 22 points as they improved to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play. The Cardinals dropped to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the SUNYAC.
Plattsburgh led for the better part of the first half, stretching the lead to eight on several occasions behind 15 first-half points by two-time First Team All-SUNYAC selection Chris Ruiz. The Lakers kept it close, though, trailing the Cardinals, 33-32, at the half.
With nine minutes left in the second and Oswego State up by one, Conor Monaghan hit a three-pointer that sparked an 11-3 run that put the Lakers ahead 58-49 with 6:17 remaining in the contest. Less than a minute later, Plattsburgh's Errol Daniyan fouled out of the game, forcing Plattsburgh to field a smaller lineup. The Lakers stretched the lead to double-digits briefly, but Plattsburgh stormed back to within five with 54 seconds remaining after two Josh Bruno free throws.
Oswego State was able to break the press as Monaghan found Burridge down low for an easy layup to secure the victory. The Lakers only committed two second-half turnovers compared to nine for the Cardinals. Monaghan and Chris Gilkes each tallied 12 points with Gilkes also grabbing 11 rebounds to earn a double-double.
Burridge continued to take the ball to the basket, earning 16 free throws in the game and making 10. Brian Gebhardt dished out seven assists in the win. The Lakers also received 37 points from their bench compared to only 17 for the Cardinals.
Ruiz finished the game with 19 points to lead Plattsburgh. Steve Thomas also chipped in 15 points for the Cardinals.
Oswego State returns to action on Friday when it travels to Geneseo to face the Blue Knights at 8 p.m.
