Thomas Tibbs scored the winning jumper as time expired to lift the Dolphins from the College of Staten Island to a 109-107 triple overtime victory against the Baruch Bearcats on Friday night in the ARC Arena.
Tibbs finished the exciting CUNYAC contest with 31 points, seven assists and five rebounds in 51 minutes of action. He also connected on a three-pointer as time expired in the second overtime period to send the memorable game to the third overtime.
The visiting Dolphins (10-3, 5-0 CUNYAC) quickly jumped out to a five point lead during each of the three overtime periods, but the Bearcats (8-8, 3-2 CUNYAC) fought back each time to tie the contest late.
Lionel Hilairetied the game in the first overtime period with a long three-pointer with 21 seconds left.
During the second overtime, Sean Loftusscored on a three-point play and returned on the team's next possession to connect on two more free throws for a Baruch lead that Tibbs would eventually tie with the first of his two late heroics at the buzzer.
In the third overtime, Mickey Abbatiellotied the game on a layup with nine second left, but Tibbs scored the winning basket to keep Staten Island undefeated in conference play.
Hiliare led Baruch this evening with 33 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Loftus finished with a double-double of 22 points and a career-high 19 rebounds in 50 minutes of action.
Arki Wisnu scored 19 points and dished out four assists. Tammer Farid rounded out the double-digit scorers with 14 points.
Jordan Young fouled out for Staten Island with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Bloochy Magliore scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Overall, Baruch shot 43 percent (36-84), while Staten Island finished shooting 42 percent (38-90).
The men's basketball team will return to action on Monday, January 17, with a 7:30 pm non-conference home game against William Paterson University.
