Augsburg holds off second half Macalester comeback

Macalester fought back from an 18-point deficit midway through the second half, using a 20-6 run to get to within four points with 4:22 to go, but visiting Augsburg held off the comeback to win 66-57 at the Leonard Center.

The Auggies improve to 9-4 overall, 4-4 in the MIAC. The Scots fall to 1-11 on the year and 1-6 in the MIAC.

Leading by a single point 29-28 at the conclusion on a closely-played opening half, Augsburg out-scored Macalester 21-4 over the first 9:11 of the second period before the Scots began their comeback.

Kyle Hamblett (Sr,. Paris, France / American School of Paris) scored 12 points and distributed four assists to lead Macalester. Chris Quinn (Fy., Medford, Mass. / Beaver Country Day) handed out a season-high seven assists.

Pumping in eight points apiece off the bench were Colin Jarvis (So., Madison, Wis. / West) and Colin Keeley (Sr., Kildeer, Ill. / Stevenson).

Both team had similar shooting statistics, but Augsburg out-scored the Scots 16-1 from the free throw stripe. Macalester turned the ball over a season-low eight times.

Andy Grzesiak-Grimm went 8-for-12 from the floor and netted a game-high 22 points to lead Augsburg (9-4 / 4-4 MIAC) past Macalester in St. Paul. Grzesiak-Grimm also pulled down eight rebounds, while Parker Hines finished with nine rebounds and six assists.

The Scots return to competition Saturday (Jan. 15) against St. Olaf at the Leonard Center at 3 p.m.
