Heidelberg upsets #24 Marietta 81-77

TIFFIN, Ohio — Nationally ranked Marietta College had its season-opening, 13-game win streak snapped following an 81-77 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) men's basketball loss at host Heidelberg University Saturday (Jan. 8) evening. [Box Score]

The Pioneers, ranked #24 in the most recent D3hoops.com Top 25, fell to 13-1 overall and 6-1 in the OAC. Marietta maintained a one-game lead over the rest of the league following the outcomes of the day's other OAC match-ups. The Student Princes improved to 6-7, 4-2 in the league.

Junior Kevin Knab (Lakewood/Lakewood) led all scorers with 19 points and added five rebounds. Classmate Trevor Halter (Malvern/Malvern) scored all his 18 points in the second half, freshman Tyler Hammond (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) added 16 points and sophomore Jacob Owens (Mansfield/Mansfield) scored 11 points. Sophomore Jason Humphrey (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) also contributed seven points and seven rebounds in the loss.

Five Heidelberg players scored double figures on Saturday. Dane Givner led the way with 15, Kyle Tuley had 14, Darion Capers added 12 and both Pat Barrett and Clifton Powell contributed 10. Nate Davis also pulled down a career-best 17 boards while adding nine points.

Marietta, who shot 45.6% (26-of-57) overall and 42.9% (6-of-14) from beyond the arc, was hurt by just 57.6% (19-of-33) shooting from the line. Heidelberg finished 25-of-55 (45.5%) from the floor, including 6-of-14 (42.9%) from long range, to go along with 25-of-39 (64.1%) from the charity stripe. The Student Princes held a 39-35 edge in rebounding.

The Pioneers, whose largest lead was seven points, 23-16, midway through the first half, took a 35-32 advantage into the intermission. The Student Princes turned the tables in the second half and led by as many as 11 points, 61-50, with 8:34 to play. Marietta responded with an 11-1 run over the next three minutes to cut the deficit to one point, 62-61. Heidelberg, however, did not relinquish the lead down the stretch and finished off the four-point upset.

Marietta will look to bounce back Wednesday (Jan. 12) night when it host second place Capital University at 7:30 p.m.
