Cal Lutheran Takes Down No. 20 Chapman

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - A smothering second half defensive effort, along with several key offensive plays made by the Kingsmen completed a 58-53 come-from-behind victory over No. 20 Chapman inside Gilbert Arena on Wednesday night. Cal Lutheran handed the Panthers their first loss to a Division III team this season.

Cal Lutheran led by as many as 10 points late in the second half before Chapman pulled to within three points in the final seconds of regulation. Kingsmen junior Aaron Van Klaveren stepped to the foul line with a chance to ice the game.



CLU has earned its recent victories in large part to the team defensive effort, which once again paved the way for a comeback attempt. Trailing by 11 early in the second period the Kingsmen outscored the Panthers 29-9 during a 13-plus minute stretch to take the lead by double figures.

Greg Grimm scored 14 of his game-high 22 points in the second half and knocked down a three-pointer that gave the hosts a lead it would hold for almost the final 12 minutes of regulation.

Chapman countered with Griffin Ramme who scored eight points in the final five minutes of the game and paced the Panthers resurgence. CU trailed 56-53 and had a potential game-tying possession with 30 ticks on the clock.

However three missed shots and a Cal Lutheran rebound led to Van Klaveren's game-sealing free throw conversions with :05.6 seconds left.

Van Klaveren finished with 12 points and nine rebounds (six offensive), while teammate Aaron Fisher secured a double-double 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Chapman season leading scorer Justin Riley was held to 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field.

Cal Lutheran (6-5) heads into conference play on Saturday, Jan. 8 on the road against Redlands.
