NEWPORT, R.I. - Freshman guard John Williamson (Littleton, Mass.) provided a spark off the bench with a team-high 16 points to lead Salve Regina University men's basketball to a 60-49 non-league win over visiting Oberlin College of Ohio.

Senior guard Windell Hinkson (Groton, Conn.) added 10 points for the Seahawks who had five different players connect on a 3-point attempt.

"That is how we wanted to begin the second semester," said Seahawk head coach Sean Foster. "Get a solid team victory today with contributions from many players. Oberlin is very well coached and their players have a high basketball IQ which made this a very difficult challenge for us. Our upperclassmen stayed composed and provided good leadership for our young guys."

The Yeomen were led by junior guard Josh Merritt (San Francisco, Calif.) who made all nine of his free-throw attempts and finished with a game-high 19 points. Oberlin made 30 of its 36 shots from the charity stripe (83.3 free-throw percentage) but shot only 29 percent from the floor (9-for-31). Sophomore guard Andrew Fox (Tempe, Ariz.) scored 11 points before fouling out with less than a minute remaining. Freshman guard Geoff Simpson (Simsbury, Conn.) scored all 10 of his points from the free-throw line.

Salve Regina freshman Scott St. Lawrence (Littlefield, N.H.) led the Seahawks off the boards with seven rebounds and added three steals. Williamson recorded four steals while senior point guard Ryan Birrell (Hope, R.I.) had a game-high five thefts.

Salve Regina (5-5) surpasses its win total from last season before hosting Coast Guard Academy on Sunday at 1 p.m.; Oberlin (1-10) completes it five-game road trip and returns to Ohio to host Case Western on Sunday at 3 p.m.
