RICHARDSON, TX (12.20.10) - Eleven players scored as the UT Dallas men's basketball team reached the 90-point mark for the third time this season in the Comets' 90-56 home win over Stevenson (Md.) at the UTD Activity Center.
The Comets (now 8-2) dominated inside as UTD nearly scored as many points in the paint (50) as Stevenson scored on the night. UTD shot 50 percent or better for the third time this season, hitting 39-of-77 shots from the field as a team (50.6%). The Comets hit just 6-of-18 from three-point range and made 6-of-8 shots from the free-throw line. UTD dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Mustangs, 46-33.
UTD jumped out to an early lead, grabbing a double-digit lead not eight minutes into the contest and leading by 25 points at the break, 48-23. The Comets hit 20-of-40 shots from the field in the opening period while forcing 15 SU turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
The Comets would lead by as many as 35 points in the second half before securing the 34-point margin of victory, the second largest margin for UTD this season. The Comets shot 51.4 percent (19-of-37) as a team in the second half with primarily reserve players on the floor.
Senior Curtis Davis led four Comets in double digits with a game-high 19 points, hitting 8-of-13 shots from the field, and adding a game-best 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Junior Chris Barnes added 17 points, junior Greg Chiasson had 13 points and freshman Kyle Schleigh had 12 points. Schleigh also added eight rebounds, two boards shy of his first career double-double. Barnes and senior Brandon Greene each dished out a team-best three assists.
For the Mustangs (3-8), Danny Murphy had a team-high 12 points while Stefon McCray came off the bench for 10 points. Murphy, McCray and Laron Knight each pulled down a team-best five rebounds. SU shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) for the night, hitting just 3-of-17 shots (17.6%) from three-point range, and shot 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from the foul line.
The Comets will now begin their marathon road swing as UTD will be away from home for the next 40 days. The Comets return to action Thursday, Dec. 30, at LSU-Shreveport. UTD does not return home until Saturday, Jan. 29.
