On Wednesday night, the Yellowjackets closed out the first half of the 2010-11 season by playing St. Scholastica for the second time in 18 days. The venue may have changed, as time the teams squared off on the Saints' home court, but the result was very much the same. With the outcome never in doubt, the Yellowjackets took the lead on a Marcus Helland (Baldwin, Wis.) three-pointer in the opening minute and never trailed, cruising to a 79-39 win at the Reif Gym.
Four players scored in double figures and ten players scored at least one point in the win, the fourth in the last five games for the Yellowjackets.
Six minutes into the game, a Dan Schmitz jumper made it an 8-6 game, but the Yellowjackets went on a 16-2 run over the next four minutes and blew the game open midway through the first half. At the break, paced by 15 points from Helland, the Yellowjackets held a 38-21 advantage. The Yellowjackets shot 44.4% from the field in the first half, including hitting 8-14 from three-point range.
In the second half, the Yellowjackets cranked it up, shooting 57.7 from the field, compared to only 35.7% for the Saints. After a 17-2 run to open the half, the Yellowjackets emptied the bench, getting 20 points from the reserves, compared to only seven for the Saints.
In addition to Helland, Jake Smith (Rhinelander, Wis.) scored 13, Dan Culy (Rice Lake, Wis.) scored 11 and Ben Aalfs (Hutchinson, Minn.) scored ten, which led all bench players. Helland grabbed 13 rebounds, which led the team.
Dustin Ritchie (Superior, Wis.) had five assists, while Brendan Bauer (Gilmantown, Wis.) had three blocks and Culy had four steals, all of which led the team.
Schmitz was the top scorer for the Saints, picking up ten points. He was the only Saints player to hit double figures in the game. Jonah Dahlman and Brett Tester had eight and seven points respectively.
