Case Western Reserve Men Defeat Baldwin-Wallace, 85-64, in Opener in University Circle

BEREA, OHIO --  Sophomore Austin Fowler scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Case Western Reserve men's basketball team defeated Baldwin-Wallace, 85-64, tonight (Monday, November 15, 2010) in CWRU's Horsbaugh Gymnasium in University Circle.

Fowler was joined in double figures for the Spartans by Tim Chung with 13 points, Evan Tsudis with 12 points, and Reid Anderson with 10 points.  The Yellow Jackets were led by senior Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./Fairview) with a team-high 13 points and three rebounds while sophomore forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heighs/Walsh Jesuit) had eight points and five rebounds.  Junior guard Scott Voiers (Westlake/Lutheran West) and Kyle Payne (Brunswick)each contributed with seven points, while Payne led the team with a team-high nine rebounds.

In the first half, Baldwin-Wallace opened up the game with a 4-0 run with sophomore guard Brandon Schmidt (Wellington) scoring the first points of the season on a layup.  Case would battle back with a 9-0 run of its own.  The Yellow Jackets hung tough tying the game at several points during the first half with the last being 13-13 before the Spartans out scored them 25-12 over the last 7:52 minutes  to  lead 36-25 at the intermission.

In the second half,  the Yellow Jackets cut the lead to seven points after a pair of Ameen free-throws at the 19:07 mark.  That would be the closest the Jackets would come before the Spartans went on a 25-11 run taking a 19-point lead, at the 9:41 mark.  Case had leads of 25-points on four separate occasions with their last being at the 1:19 mark. 

Overall, the Spartans outrebounded B-W 53-39 including a 20-18 advantage on the offensive side,

The Yellow Jackets open the 2010-11 home schedule this Thursday, November 18 when they host Bethany College of West Virginia in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 7:00 p.m. The first Ohio Athletic Conference game is on Wednesday, December 1 when B-W hosts Heidelberg University at 7:30 p.m.
