Arlington, VA --- In the opening game of the 2010 Marymount-Marine Corps Tip-Off Tournament held at the Verizon Sports Arena in Arlington, VA, the Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team fell to the Capital University Crusaders by a score of 75-72 earlier today. With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 1-1 on the season, while the Crusaders open their season at 1-0.
The game featured a game of two halves, as Brooklyn came out strong to start the game taking an 11-point lead at halftime, 39-28. The Bulldogs utilized their hot shooting hand in the first half posting a blistering 70.8% (17-for-24) shooting percentage from the field.
Brooklyn continued its success in the second half as the Bulldogs would push their lead to as many as 26 points with 14:09 remaining in the game. However, the Crusaders would chip away at their deficit outscoring Brooklyn 47-33 in the second stanza to take the eventual 75-72 victory. A big reason for Capital's comeback win was their advantage on the boards, as the Crusaders out rebounded the Bulldogs 38-17 for the game, which led to 20 second chance points for Capital. The Crusaders also took advantage of the charity stripe all game long going 16-for-17 (94.1%) at the free throw line.
The Bulldogs had four starters score in double figures, led by junior Tyshawn Russell (Jamaica, NY/Holy Cross) who netted a game-high 24 points on 10-for-14 shooting from the floor. Senior Ahmad Hemingway (Brooklyn, NY/Curtis) dropped 17 points, while classmate Darnell Cudjoe (Brooklyn, NY/Murray Bergtraum) finished the day with 16 points and four rebounds. Junior Amil John (Brooklyn, NY/South Shore) had a well rounded game with 11 points, five assists and five steals.
Capital had three starters in double figures with Scott Robertson and DJ Frazier each netting 15 points apiece. Spencer Niekamp chipped in with 10 points. The Crusaders bench also played a major role in the outcome of the game, as Capital's substitutes outscored Brooklyn's reserves 29-2.
Brooklyn will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, November 20th, for day two of the Marymount-Marine Corps Tip-Off Tournament, as the Bulldogs will take on host Marymount University at 1:30 pm in the consolation game. Marymount lost to Greensboro College, 72-70, in the second game of the day. Capital and Greensboro will play in the championship game at 5:30 pm.
