Manson & Akinrola Lead RIC Past Salve Regina, 78-56

Newport, R.I.-Rhode Island College junior center Mike Akinrola (Woonsocket, RI) scored a game-high 20 points, while senior guard Nick Manson (Newport, RI) netted 18 in his hometown, as the Rhode Island College men's basketball team defeated Salve Regina, 78-56, at the Rodgers Athletic Center.

 

The Anchormen (6-1) have not lost since opening night to Becker (67-53) on Nov. 15. The Seahawks (3-4) suffer their fourth loss. Akinrola shot an efficient 10-for-13 and was a dominant post presence.

 

Akinrola scored on a fastbreak layup with 10:39 remaining in the first half to tie the game at 14-14, and that ignited a 26-9 run for the visitors who led by 15 points (38-23) after a Manson three-pointer with 2:08 left.

 

 The Seahawks got as close as 10 points (46-36) following a three-pointer from senior guard Windell Hinkson (Groton, CT). But a pair of layups from senior forward Carl Lee (Warwick, RI) capped a 16-4 run by the Anchormen over a five-minute stretch. Rhode Island College led by as many as 25 points (78-53) before SRU freshman guard Alex Pratt (Nashua, NH) finished the scoring with his first career 3-pointer.

 

 Patrick Dinneen (Medfield, MA) led Salve Regina with 11 points, while 11 different Anchormen scored for Rhode Island College. Senior point guard Ryan Birrell (Hope, RI) dished out seven assists for the Seahawks while junior swingman Mason Choice (Newport, RI) assisted on nine field goals for the visitors. Sophomore center Steven Roberts (New Haven, CT) led RIC with seven rebounds.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at WPI on Thursday, Dec. 9.
