In a tale of two halves, both teams held double digit leads. UW-Stevens Point picked the right time, the second half, in a 72-61 win over UW-Whitewater at Quandt Fieldhouse in Stevens Point, Wisconsin Wednesday night.
Whitewater led the entire first half. With 1:52 before the break, Alex Edmunds put in a layup to give UW-W a 33-21 lead, ending an 8-2 run that gave the Warhawks their largest lead of the game. The Pointers hit a three-pointer with six seconds left to make it 35-27 Whitewater at the half.
UW-SP scored the first three baskets of the second half, all layups, to cut Whitewater's lead to 35-33 with 18:12 left. Senior forward Scott Hoelzel tipped in a basket at 16:17 to give the Pointers their first lead of the game, 40-39. Edmunds responded with a dunk at 15:03 to put Whitewater in front 41-40, their last lead of the game.
Point followed up with an 11-2 run, seven of those from sophomore guard Tyler Tillema, to go in front 51-43 at 11:08. Whitewater came back to within five, 62-57 on two free throws by senior guard D.J. Dantzler with 5:25 left. UW-SP scored the next eight points to build their largest lead of the game, 70-57 with 2:57 on the clock.
Whitewater shot 54% from the floor in the first half, holding the Pointers to 41%, and UW-W had a 19-11 rebound advantage. In the second half the worm turned, with the Pointers shooting 64% and limiting Whitewater to 28%, and the the rebound margin was exactlty the same (8) as the first half -- but Point held the advantage.
Edmunds led both teams with a career high 20 points, topping the previous best of 16 that he managed against Defiance November 19 and La Crosse December 1 this season. Edmunds has scored in double figures in five of Whitewater's six games. Edmunds hit 8-10 shots from the floor and was 2-2 from the line. Sophomore guard Antone Byrd added 13 points, and junior center Chris Davis and Dantzler added 11 apiece. Edmunds also grabbed a game high ten rebounds. Senior point guard Phil Negri contributed four assists, high for the game, with just one turnover, and was also credited with seven boards.
Junior forward Dan Tillema and sophomore guard Jerrel Harris shared scoring honors for the Pointers with 15 points. Tyler Tillema scored 14, Hoelzel 12, and senior forward Scott Krull 11. Tyler Tillema had seven rebounds and three assists, the latter equaled by Harris.
UW-W, 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, will travel to the other end of the state to face UW-Superior Saturday. The next home game will be December 18 at 5:00, with Marian University (WI) visiting Kachel Gym in Williams Center.
