BANGOR, Maine -- Sophomore Mark Zaharchuk (Richmond, Maine) and senior Jay Uhrin (Winterport, Maine) combined to score 45 points as the host Husson University Eagles claimed the title at the 43rd annual Paul Bunyan Tournament with a 76-62 win over the University of New England on Sunday afternoon at Newman Gymnasium.

Zaharchuk, a 6'10" center, was chosen tournament MVP after powering his way to 23 points and grabbing nine rebounds in just 24 minutes of playing time. He was 7 of 8 from the floor and 9 of 12 from the free throw line. Uhrin tossed in 22 points, including 3-for-4 accuracy from beyond the arc.

The Eagles (5-1), who claimed the tourney title for the first time in five years, received a strong supporting performance from senior all-tourney choice Josh Jones (Jefferson, Maine). Jones posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards while handing out five assists.

Junior Marcus Winn (Austin, Texas) came off the bench to pour in a career-high 25 points for UNE. The all-tournament selection drained five 3-pointers and was 8-for-10 from the charity stripe. Senior Chas Rentrope (Peoria, Ariz.), another all-tourney choice, contributed 13 points.

Husson starting quickly, rushing out to a lead of 10-0 just 4:31 into the contest. The hosts would continue to surge, building a 22-point advantage (33-11) with 7:18 remaining in the half.

The Nor'easters fought back with a 19-9 run to close the frame to trail 40-30 at intermission. Husson limited Big Blue to 33.3 percent (7 of 21) accuracy over the opening 20 minutes.

After the Eagles scored the first three points of the final stanza to open up a 13-point cushion, UNE reeled off seven consecutive points to close within six (43-37). That would be as close as the Nor'easters were able to get, as Husson edged away to win its fifth game in six starts.

The two teams combined for 65 trips to the free throw stripe. Husson held a 40-29 lead on the backboards and created 22 UNE turnovers.

The Eagles return to action Thursday when they travel to Lewiston for a game at Bates College.

UNE (2-7) closes first-semester action Saturday with a road game at the University of Maine Farmington. The tip at Dearborn Gymnasium is slated for 3 p.m.
