McClary scores career-high 38 in Olivet men’s basketball team’s 94-79 win over Madonna

OLIVET, Mich. – Senior Michael McClary (Bellaire) scored a career-high 38 points to lead the Olivet College men's basketball team to a 94-79 win over Madonna University tonight in the second day of the 2010 MIAA-WHAC Challenge at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. With University of Mich.-Dearborn's 77-75 win against Alma College in tonight's first, the MIAA won 3-of-4 games of the challenge. For their efforts, McClary and senior Joe Post (Olivet) were selected to the all-tournament team.

The Crusaders opened the game with an early eight-point lead, 13-5, at the 15:37 mark. The Comets then went on a 14-0 run to take a 19-13 lead. The run was capped by a three-pointer by junior Cameron Duncan (Lansing/Waverly). Olivet stretched its lead to nine points, 27-18, with 9:39 left in the first half.

Madonna fought back and tied the game at 31-31. The Comets broke the tie with a triple by junior Eric Mack (Eastpointe/Roseville) and did not give up the lead for the rest of the game. In the first 14 minutes of the second half, Olivet led by 14 points four times, with the last time being at the 5:55 mark when Mack canned a three-pointer. Down the stretch, the Comets made 7-of-9 free throws to build its lead to as many as 16 points.

McClary drained 17-of-26 baskets and 4-of-4 free throws for his 38 points. He also grabbed 13 rebounds for the 40th double-double of his career. The 38 points moved McClary into fifth-place on Olivet's all-time scoring list with 1,244 points.

Duncan was a spark off the bench with a career-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Sophomore Dakotah Ellis (Birch Run) added 10 points. Post finished with six points, nine assists, four steals and two blocks.

The Crusaders placed three starters in double figures, led by all-tournament selection Bryant Slaughter with 21 points. Bobby Naubert added 20 points, while Geoff Gaylor had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Olivet returns to the court next Monday, Nov. 22 at Anderson (Ind.) University. Tip-off at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium is 7:30 p.m.
