FARMINGTON, Maine -- Mike Russell (Wellesley, Mass.) reached the 1,000-point milestone as Colby College survived a 57-47 struggle with the University of Maine at Farmington in non-conference men's basketball action tonight at Dearborn Gymnasium.

Farmington (1-3) is scheduled to visit Bates College Tuesday at 7 p.m., while the Mules (3-2) are slated to host the Colby Invitational this weekend.

Russell, the 35th player in Colby history to reach the 1,000-point mark, finished with 22 points and 19 rebounds to power the Mules. Eric Beaulieu (Concord, Mass.) chipped in 11 points in the win.

Farmington forced the visitors into 30 turnovers, but Colby outrebounded the Beavers 50-22 leading to 18 second-chance points.

DJ Gerrish (Rumford, Maine) and Eric Taylor (Oakland, Maine) each netted 11 points for Farmington with Yusuf Iman (Auburn, Maine) adding 10 points.

Despite a woeful shooting night for the Beavers (29 percent, 18-62 -- 9-31 in each half), Farmington was in the game with a pair of Iman free throws with 1:45 left cut the Colby lead to 49-45. After a Christian Van Loenen (Falmouth, Maine) jumper made it 51-45, Colby's Ben Foreman (Los Angeles, Calif.) picked off a Farmington pass and Russell finished with turnover with a layup for a 53-45 lead with 50 seconds left. The Mules knocked down four of four foul shots in the final 40 seconds for the 57-47 win.

In front of a packed Dearborn Gymnasium for the home opener for the Beavers, the two teams battled with seven ties and no lead over three points for the first fifteen minutes. After a Gerrish basket tied the game at 24-24 with 5:04 left in the half, Colby hit three free throws to finish off the frame's scoring with a 27-24 edge.

After a 33-33 tie, Colby scored the next seven points to build a 40-33 lead with 9:14 left and never allowed the Beavers within a possession to take the 57-47 win.
