WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College senior forward Mike Russell (Wellesley/Wellesley, Mass.) became the 35th player in program history to score 1,000 career points after leading the Mules to a 57-47 non-conference victory over University of Maine at Farmington on Thursday night.
Russell reached his milestone in style with game-highs of 22 points and 19 rebounds. He also tied for the team lead in assists with three. Russell has 1,013 career points and 694 rebounds just five games into his senior season. He has already moved up to 32nd on the all-time scoring list with Ken Federman (1961-64).
Russell was tough in the final minutes to give the Mules (3-2 overall) some breathing room. The Beavers had cut Colby's lead to 49-45 with just 1:45 left in the contest, but Christian Van Loenen nailed a jumper with 1:02 to play. Russell followed with an inside basket just 12 seconds later and added two free throws in the final minute to put Colby up 55-45.
Russell was 7-for-12 from the field and 8-for-10 from the foul line. He had 14 defensive rebounds and also had two steals and one blocked shot. Eric Beaulieu added 11 points, six boards, and three blocked shots. The Mules also received eight points and six rebounds from Kyle Donovan, nine points and four boards from Gordon Fischer, and six points and five rebounds by Van Loenen.
Colby won the game despite having 30 turnovers to just 11 by UMF. The Mules, though, held the Beavers to 29 percent field goal shooting (18-for-62) and Colby had a nice 17-7 edge in made free throws in the game.
Eric Taylor and DJ Gerrish both had 11 points for UMF.
