COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – It's always a special night when Ursinus and Franklin & Marshall do battle on the basketball court, but, Wednesday night's tilt will be even more special.
Prior to the start of the game at 7:30, Ursinus will retire the jersey number of former standout and current assistant coach Mike McGarvey will have his number 11 jersey placed in the rafters of Helfferich Hall, joining former basketball players Dennis Stanton and Richie Barrett.
McGarvey, a four-year member of the basketball team from 2002 to 2006, was a three-time All-Conference selection. A two-time Centennial Conference Player of the Year, McGarvey was also a two-time All-American during his junior and senior years. He was a finalist for the prestigious Josten's Trophy during his senior season, which honors the best men's basketball player in Division III in the fields of academics, athletics and community service.
In each of his four years, he led the conference in assists and steals, finishing his career with 754 assists and 1,460 points. He ranks fourth in school history in points and is the Centennial Conference and school leader in assists. His assist total also ranks sixth best in Division III currently.
Away from the court, he was on the Dean's List at Ursinus and led the team to three College Basketball Officials Association Sportsmanship awards.
A captain as a junior and senior, he has been an assistant coach with the team since graduating with his degree in 2006.
The game will be streamed live at www.ursinusathletics.com. Ursinus comes into the game with a mark of 2-2 and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference, while Franklin and Marshall is 3-1 and 1-0 Centennial, ranked 15th in Division III.
