FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Edgewood College men's basketball junior Ben Wisniewski kept his team in the game in the first half at Marian University, and the Eagles responded in the second half. Wisniewski scored 15 of his 22 points in the opening stanza and Edgewood College held the Sabres to just 18 second half points in a 65-46 Northern Athletics Conference opener victory.

Marian University (1-4, 0-1 NAC) scored 11 of the first 14 points of the game to grab what turned out to be their largest lead of the night. While the rest of the Eagles looked for their offensive rhythm, Wisniewski used some deadly three-point shooting to keep Edgewood College close.

Wisniewski hit three of his first four shots from behind the arc and scored the Eagles' first nine points. His second triple sparked a 12-2 run which gave Edgewood College (3-3, 1-0 NAC) their first lead of the game at 15-13. Fellow junior Kent Faurote hit two buckets and freshman Justin Williams finished the run with a jump shot. The two teams traded scores the rest of the first half until Williams scored at the halftime buzzer off an assist from Jake Guziewski to give the Eagles a 30-28 lead at the break.

Marian's Jeff Harris scored a bucket 10 seconds into the second half, but that would be the last time Sabres were tied with the Eagles. Junior Derek Nkemnji scored a layup on the next possession which launched the Eagles on a 17-4 run. Sophomore Craig Cashton scored seven consecutive points and senior Jeff Barczak converted a three-point play to give the Eagles a commanding 47-34 lead.

Shortly thereafter, Harris scored a layup to cut the Eagles' lead to 51-43, but a jumper by Faurote and another three-point play, this time by Nkemnji, pushed the lead back to 56-43. The Eagles were never threatened again.

Wisniewski was the only Eagle in double figures, but a trio of players, Craig, Nkemnji and Faurote scored nine points each. Williams chipped in a season-high seven points, including his first career three-point basket. Guziewski came off the bench to snare a career-high nine rebounds to lead the Eagles on the glass. Craig handed out a team-high six assists. As a team, the Eagles hit 53.8 percent (7-for-13) from the three-point line.

Sam Forkert led the Sabres with 12 points, while Cody Veleke added nine points and four blocked shots. The Eagles limited Marian to just 29.1 percent (16-for-55) shooting from the field and only 9.1 percent (1-for-11) from the three-point arc.

Edgewood College will return home on Saturday for their first home game since the season opener on November 15. The Eagles, the NAC North Division preseason favorite will tip off against the NAC South Division preseason favorite Concordia University Chicago at 4:15 p.m. Like all home games, the contest will be broadcast live on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
