'Jackets Top Saints

The Yellowjacket men's basketball team, fresh off a tight loss at Minnesota-Duluth on Tuesday, got another crack at a Twin Ports rival on Saturday afternoon when they hosted St. Scholastica at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.  This time around, the result was much more to their liking.  The Yellowjackets owned a hefty lead at halftime and expanded the margin in the second half, rolling to an 84-45 win over the Saints and improving to 4-1 on the season.

The wide margin of victory allowed the 'Jackets to rest some key players and get the whole roster in on the action.  Dan Culy (Rice Lake, Wis.) led all scorers with 19 points, followed by Jake Smith (Rhinelander, Wis.), Dustin Ritchie (Superior, Wis.) and Marcus Helland (Baldwin, Wis.), all of whom scored in double figures.

The Yellowjackets jumped out early, scoring the first seven points of the game, five of them coming from Helland.  The 'Jackets would shoot over 55% from the field in the first half and build a 41-24 lead.  A 15-6 run to open the second half would stretch the lead further, as Helland, Aaron Corry (Lake Nebagamon, Wis.) and Brendan Bauer (Gilmantown, Wis.) would lead the way with six points apiece in the second half.  The shooting percentage would fall off slightly in the second half, but hit 4-7 from three-point range to increase their point total.

Bauer and Corry tied for the team rebound lead with seven apiece.  Ritchie led the team with five assists and three steals and Smith was tops on the team in blocks with two.

In total, 11 different players found their way into the scoring column for the Yellowjackets.

Logan Schultz was the top scorer in the game for St. Scholastica with nine points.
