CHICAGO -- Andy Burns hit eight three-point baskets en route to a 35-point performance as St. John's (Minn.) University edged the University of Chicago men's basketball team 90-87 in non-conference play Sunday at the Ratner Athletics Center.

The game featured 25 three-point baskets as the teams combined to shoot 53% from three-point distance.

With his team up 73-71 with 4:48 left in the game, Burns scored the Johnnies' next 15 points.

Chicago tied the game at 81-81 on Tom Williams' three-pointer with 1:14 to go. Burns answered with a trey with 56 seconds remaining, then connected on four free throw attempts during an 11-second stretch to put the Johnnies on top 88-84 with :16 showing on the clock.

A three-pointer from Michael Sustarsic drew the Maroons to within a point, 88-87 with 12 seconds left. After a pair of Sam Blank foul shots with :08 to play increased the Johnnies' lead to 90-87, Chicago turned the ball over on its final possession.

Chicago (1-4) jumped out to a 14-3 lead, but St. John's (3-1) closed the gap to 40-39 by halftime.

The Maroons held a small lead for most of the first 12 minutes of the second stanza until two Aaron Barmore free throws gave the Johnnies a 71-69 advantage at the 5:58 mark.

Burns, whose 35 points matched the most by an opposing player in the eight-year history of the Ratner Center, connected on eight of 11 attempts from behind the arc. Chris Schwartz hit five of nine long range tries as St. John's finished the day 13-for-23 (56.5%).

Schwartz finished with 17 points, while Aaron Burtzel (16) and Barmore (10) also netted double figures.
