Baruch Knocks Off Wesleyan (92-81) in Double OT, Chris Beauchamp Scores 30 Points

Chris Beauchamp scored 30 points, including 16 total points in the two overtime sessions, to lead the Baruch Bearcats to a 92-81 double overtime victory over the Cardinals of Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon in the ARC Arena.

The Bearcats (4-1) led throughout regulation and built up a 13 point (37-24) halftime advantage. They continued to lead comfortably in the second half and were up as much as 10 points (64-54) with 4:15 left in regulation.

However, the visiting Cardinals (1-3) from the NESCAC rallied late behind the shooting of Jason Mendell with a pair of 3-pointers and one free throw with 35 seconds left to tie the game (66-66) and send it to overtime.

In the first overtime, Wesleyan took their first and only lead of the game on a lay up by Mike Callaghan for a 68-66 advantage with 2:30 remaining. Baruch rallied to tie the game and had a chance to win at the buzzer, but a put back off a missed three-pointer did not fall to end the first overtime tied at 70.

In the second overtime, Baruch began with an 11-2 run for an 81-72 lead with 2:25 remaining. Beauchamp and Lionel Hilaire scored five points each in the game-busting run, but the Cardinals tried to rally again with a jumper by Mendell and a free throw by Dave Maltz to cut the deficit to 83-77 with 1:56 left.

Baruch responded at the free throw line by hitting all nine of their free throws attempts down the stretch to pull away for the 92-81 double-overtime victory.

Beauchamp lead four Baruch players in double-figure scoring with 30 points (17-19 FT) and four steals, while Sean Loftus recorded a double-double with 18 points (8-12 fg) and 11 rebounds. Hilaire finished with 15 points, five assists and two steals in 42 minutes of action. Senior captain Tammer Farid scored 13 points.

Mendell led Wesleyan with 25 points, including 19 points in the second half to help tie the game and send it to overtime. Shasha Brown had a solid all-around game for the visitors with 19 points, seven assists, five steals and four rebounds in 46 minutes of action.

The Baruch Bearcats will return to action and begin their CUNYAC schedule on Thursday, December 2, with a 7:30 home game against the Beavers of CCNY.

Wesleyan will quickly resume action on Tuesday, November 30, with a 7:00 pm non-conference home game against Framingham State.
