Mount Union Gets First Win of the Season

MEMPHIS, Tenn.--Five players scored in double figures as Mount Union's men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season, 93-86 over Rust (Miss.) Saturday at the Rhodes College Thanksgiving Classic in Memphis, Tenn.

Mount Union (1-3) got a career-high 19 points from senior guard Ben Hodkinson (Tippecanoe/Harrison Central).  Senior forward Dave Pellerite (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls) also had 19, junior forward Jimmy Wood (Wintersville/Indian Creek) had 18, freshman forward Tyler Fausnight (North Canton/Hoover) had 12 and sophomore forward Matt Kiger (Williamstown, W.Va./Williamstown) had 11 to round out the double digit scorers.

Markeith Wilson had a game-high 24 for Rust (3-1).

Mount Union used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to take a 24-13 capped by a three-pointer from Pellerite with 7:22 to play in the period.  The Purple Raiders etended that lead to as many as 12 then took a 37-28 lead into the break.

Rust came back scoring 10 of the first 13 points in the second half to close to within a bucket, 40-38, with 17:08 remaining.

Wood and Pellerite then hit back-to-back to three pointers and the Raiders ran the lead out to as many as 14 points, 64-50, over the next five minutes. 

Rust rallied again and this time took the lead 81-79 on a pair of free throws with 2:18 to play.

Pellerite again answered again with another big three pointer that gave the Raiders the lead for good with two minutes to go and Mount Union closed the game out going 11-of-12 from the line the rest of the way.

Mount Union takes on Piedmont (Ga.), a 74-65 winner over Rhodes Saturday, Sunday afternoon at 2 pm (eastern).
