The Yellowjacket men's basketball team remained perfect early in the 2010-11 season, winning a pair of games at home as part of the Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Weekend, which was sponsored by the National Bank of Commerce. On Friday, the Yellowjackets blasted an overmatched Macalester club, then returned to the court to squeak out a win over Gustavus, improving to 3-0 on the season.
The Yellowjackets made their home debut on Friday night, hosting a Macalester College team that went 2-21 a year ago and dropped their first game of the season earlier in the week. With nearly 400 fans in attendance, the 'Jackets didn't disappoint in jumping out to an eight-point lead in the first half. The lead increased in the second half, as the home team heated up and shot 61.5% from the field. Marcus Helland (Baldwin, Wis.) led all Yellowjackets with 17 points on the night. Jake Smith (Rhinelander, Wis.) and Dan Culy (Rice Lake, Wis.) chipped in 14 and 12 points respectively. Smith also grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out five assists, both team-leading.
Pierce Peters led Macalester with 16 points.
