RAMAPO, N.J. (Nov. 21, 2010) – The Maritime basketball team competed in the Ramapo Tip-Off Tournament this past weekend in New Jersey. The Privateers lost to Salve Regina, 72-63, on Saturday and defeated Yeshiva, 71-69, in the third-place game on Sunday. After the weekend's action, Maritime's record moves to 2-1 overall on the season. The Seahawks came in second place to the hosts, Ramapo, and also have a 2-1 record, while the Maccabees fall to 0-4.
Against Salve Regina, the Privateers led for nearly three-quarters of the game, but lost the lead midway through the second half of play. Maritime led by as much as nine points late in the first half and took a seven-point lead into halftime, 31-24. The Seahawks took over the advantage with 11:08 remaining in the game and never looked back. The Privateers committed 24 turnovers and Salve Regina turned that into 24 points.
Maritime was led by senior Quamel Lyerly (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence), who scored 19 points and had seven boards and three steals. Classmate Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) recorded his second straight double-double with 15 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Junior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) also scored 15 points.
In the victory over Yeshiva on Sunday, the Privateers quickly jumped out to a seven-point lead, 12-5, just 4:06 into action. The Macs fought back and took a lead late in the first half, but Maritime scored the last two buckets to go into the locker room ahead, 29-26.
In the second half, play was so close that the lead changed 12 times. Maritime fell behind by one, 59-58, with 1:14 remaining. Hurley was fouled and hit one-of-two to tie the game at 59. Yeshiva missed a jumper on their ensuing possession, Hurley grabbed the defensive board and the Privateers quickly called timeout to set up their final possession. On it, Hurley hit the game-winning jumper with four seconds remaining. The Macs threw up a last second jumper that missed.
McSloy led Maritime with 15 points, while Hurley recorded another double-double with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Both players had a team-high three steals. Lyerly rounded out the Privateers double-digit scorers with 11 points.
The Maritime basketball team returns to action on next Tuesday, Nov. 30, when the squad travels to take on Skyline opponent Bard. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Raptors' Stevenson Gymnasium in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.
