NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Junior guard Conley Taylor led the way again, with 26 points, as the Captains held off a late run by St. John Fisher (0-2) for their second win of the season. CNU went up by as many as 12 in the first half, but trailed by two with less than two minutes remaining before Taylor went coast-to-coast to tie it back up and lead the Captains to a 69-65 win.
The Captains took a game-high 12 point lead after a huge three-point play from Taylor with 2:30 remaining in the first half, followed by a technical foul on the Cardinals. Jake Capin knocked down the free-throws and Taylor completed the traditional three-point play for the game's largest lead.
CNU led 38-30 at halftime, led by Taylor's 18 points. Mike Green added six rebounds and six points in the first 20 minutes. St. John Fisher was led by Ozell Franklin with eight points and seven rebounds.
In the second half, the Cardinals methodically cut into the Captains lead, as Franklin took over. He scored 15 second half points on 5-of-9 shooting, including the game-tying bucket with 5:12 remaining. On the next possession, he hit a pair of free-throws to give St. John Fisher their first lead in over 25 minutes of game time.
With the score 63-61 in favor of the Cardinals, Christopher Newport would close on an 8-3 run triggered by Taylor's coast-to-coast bucket.
Taylor finished with a game-high 26 points on 11-of-24 shooting, while adding six steals and five assists. Green finished just one rebound shy of a double-double, with 17 points and nine boards on 7-of-10 shooting. Rookie Alex Granger was also in double figures, with 11 points, while also hauling in five boards.
St. John Fisher was led by Franklin with 23 points and 13 rebounds on 7-of-16 shooting. Grant Wrap added 11 points and six rebounds.
