Record-Setting Night Gives UR Men A Victory

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The University of Rochester tied a school record with 16 three-point goals and went on to an 81-52 victory over St. Lawrence University in the first round of the Chuck Resler Tournament at the Palestra.

Mike Labanowski set career highs with eight three pointers and 24 points. He led four  Yellowjackets (1-0) in double figures. Nate Novosel had 19 points. Chris Dende scored 12 points on four treys, and Dan Shapiro scored 11 points, hitting three outside the arc.

Ralph Temgoua led St. Lawrence (1-1) with 15 points. Garrett Sharlow had 12 points and nine rebounds. The Saints hit only five of 24 shots (21%) in the first half. Rochester hit 54% (14 of 26), eight of 17 outside the arc (47%) and led, 41-15.

Novosel made a layup, followed by three-pointers from Dende and Labanowski midway through the first half as Rochester took a 19-8 lead. The Saints got within six on Kyle Miller's three-pointer at 8:44 (19-13). Rochester ran off a 16-0 spurt over the next seven minutes to build the lead to 35-13. Labanowski hit two threes and Dende sank one.

Rochester's victory gave Luke Flockerzi a win in his debut as the Yellowjacket head coach. Flockerzi coached at Skidmore College for three seasons. He came to the River Campus in July to replace Mike Neer who retired after 34 seasons.
