St. Thomas used a 13-1 run in the final 7:00 to erase the last Concordia University lead en route to a 76-72 road win Tuesday night in non-conference men's basketball on the Golden Bears' court in St. Paul.
St. Thomas, ranked 13th in Division III, shot 53% from the floor in the season-opening win. Five different players scored during a 13-1 run that built a 70-59 lead with 3:53 left. UST sank 11-of-13 at the foul line.
Alex Healy scored 16 points, Anders Halvorsen had 14 points and seven rebounds, Tommy Hannon scored 12 points, Tyler Nicolai had 10 points, and Peter Leslie scored eight.
It was the third season in a row it pulled out a close win on the road against the Division II Bears. The Toms edged CU in overtime in 2008-09 and won by two in the 2009-10 meeting.
The win was No. 800 in the last 43 seasons of Tommie hoops for Steve Fritz as a head coach, assistant coach and player.
St. Thomas travels to Tacoma this weekend to play Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound.
