Nashua, NH – Junior Jonathan Smalls (Deer Park, N.Y.) led a balanced Daniel Webster College attack with 15 points while senior Chris Voukides (Salem, N.H.) drilled four three-pointers on the way to 14 points as the Eagles opened their 2010-11 campaign with a solid 79-55 men's basketball victory over Johnson State Monday night at the Mario Vagge Gymnasium.
Sophomore Keith Speed (Columbus, Ohio) added 13 points with four treys and senior Eric Suarez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds as the Eagles (1-0) won their season opener for the third straight season including the second straight year over the Badgers.
Sophomore John Hickson (Springfield, Mass.) scored eight for the Eagles, while rookie Daris Cosby (Columbia, S.C.) pulled down a game-high nine boards in his collegiate debut.
Senior Chris Hanson (Salem, Mass.) finished with a game-high six assists, adding seven boards and six points.
Rob Key (New Britain, Conn.) and Ian Passino (Peru, N.Y.) paced Johnson State (0-1) with 17 points each. Key added eight caroms while Brian Phelps (Milton, Vt.) chipped in with eight points.
Rebounding and ball movement were key throughout as the Eagles racked up a 49-34 advantage on the glass and combined for 18 assists to the Badgers' six.
DWC also pulled away from a nine-point advantage at the break (34-25) by shooting 54-percent from the floor in the second half including eight from downtown to break it open. The Eagles led by as many as 27 over the final five minutes.
The Eagles return to action on Friday night when they face Colby-Sawyer at 8:00 p.m. at the Rivier College tip off.
Johnson State hosts Vermont Tech. on Thursday in their home opener at 7:00 p.m.
