Tigers, Blues win; Wartburg marooned

No. 11 DePauw and No. 16 Whitman won their first round showdowns with ranked foes while Chicago topped No. 8 Wartburg and SUNY New Paltz surprised No. 19 Bowdoin in the first round of the NCAA Division III women's basketball tournament.

Chicago denied No. 8 Wartburg another road run to the national semifinals as the Maroons defeated the Knights, 67-63. Katie Sommer's layup gave Wartburg a 59-58 lead with 1:43 to play. Chicago responded with a layup by Olariche Obi to regain the lead and, after a Wartburg turnover, Miranda Burt scored a layup to push the Maroons lead to three. Aryn Jones pulled the Knights within one on Wartburg's next possession but Chicago made six of seven free throw attempts down the stretch to seal the victory. Chicago will play St. Thomas in the second round after the Tommies rolled over UW-Superior, 98-56. Recap

The other three undefeated teams also advanced easily. No. 1 Amherst led Regis (Mass.) 20-2 at the end of one period en route to a 65-37 victory. No. 5 Ohio Northern blasted Lakeland 68-36 and No. 4 Thomas More cruised past Eureka, 97-58.

Playing their third game in two weeks, No. 16 Whitman held off No. 23 George Fox 76-72 to advance to the second round. Chelsi Brewer's layup gave Whitman a 71-65 lead with 2:38 to play but the Bruins responded with three-pointers from Kimberly Frost and and Tavin Headings to tie the game at 71 with 47 seconds remaining. On the Blues' next possession, Brewer nailed a three-pointer to put Whitman back in front. Kaycee Creech split a pair of free throws to get George Fox within two but Casey Poe made two free throws for Whitman to put the game out of reach. Brewer finished with 20 points Makana Stone posted a double-double for Whitman (24-4).

No. 11 DePauw closed the third quarter on a 14-4 run to take control of its matchup with No. 14 Gustavus Adolphus and went on to win, 67-57. Emily Budde's jump shot keyed the Tigers' game winning run and she finished with 17 points, five steals and three rebounds. Taylor Howard added 18 points and 12 rebounds for DePauw (27-2) which will play UW-Oshkosh in the second round. The Titans eliminated Calvin 63-55 despite Bre Luurtsema tallying 22 points and nine rebounds for Calvin.

SUNY New Paltz scored an upset win over No. 19 Bowdoin 62-61 to extend its Cinderella story. After winning the SUNYAC's automatic bid last Saturday, the Hawks built a 10-point lead midway through the fourth quarter before the Polar Bears rallied within four. Bowdoin hit a three with six seconds left to get to 62-61 but New Paltz ran out the clock for its first NCAA tournament victory. Recap

Bridgette Mann hit a three-pointer with 0.6 seconds remaining to give Scranton its only lead over the University of New England and a dramatic first round victory, 49-48. The game-winning shot was Mann's only made three in 11 attempts and gave Scranton the 1,000th win in program history. The Lady Royal will play SUNY Poly tomorrow night after the Wildcats ran past Eastern Connecticut, 80-72. Stevie Ray rolled up 43 points on 14-for-30 shooting, including five made threes, in 40 minutes.

While most Top 25 teams advanced, Messiah not. Babson knocked out the Falcons 59-53 behind Jennifer Narlee's 11 points and 15 rebounds. The Beavers will play No. 25 FDU-Florham which pulled away from Gwynedd Mercy 58-46.

No. 15 Trine topped Illinois Wesleyan in a defensive battle 63-56. The Thunder outscored the Titans 19-11 in the fourth quarter with Brandi Dawson and Hayley Martin scoring 11 in the decisive fourth quarter. No. 24 Wheaton (Ill.) avoided another first round loss as the Thunder edged Rose-Hulman 57-54. Trailing 55-54, the Fighting Engineers had multiple chances to take the lead but came up empty. Katie McDaniels scored 15 ponts for the Thunder who will play No. 6 Washington U. tomorrow night.

No. 18 Hope jumped out to a 15-5 lead on UW-Whitewater and held off the Warhawks, 78-71. Francesca Buchanan tallied 21 points and eight rebounds for the Flying Dutch who will battle Thomas More tomorrow night.

Two hosts were eliminated from the tournament on opening night. Marymount raced out to a 50-27 lead on Guilord in North Carolina and then survived the Quakers' rally, 74-70. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps pulled away from Texas-Dallas 79-63 as Kailee Severt scored 24 points for the Athenas. Claremont will play No. 7 Trinity (Texas) which took care of Hendrix, 82-74.

Mass-Dartmough won its NCAA tournament debut by beating La Roche 71-64. Husson battled past DeSales 74-72 for its first NCAA tournament winIthaca held off Rochester Tech 65-62 in a meeting of teams that will be in the same conference next season.
