Zevi Samet became the first Division III men’s player to reach the 2,000-point milestone this season and closed in on Yeshiva University’s all-time scoring record, as the Maccabees defeated SUNY Purchase, 71-46, on Tuesday night.
Samet hit the milestone with a jumper during the second half of the Maccabees’ conference-opening win over the Panthers. SUNY-Purchase hung with the defending Skyline Conference champions into the early minutes of the second half and trailed by one at 32-31 after Sean Holzman’s three-pointer. But the Maccabees went on a 27-5 run capped by four points from Samet. He finished with 12 points, giving him 2,004 in his career.
Three-time All-American Ryan Turrell holds the program record with 2,158 points, which Samet should break later this season. Samet has scored at least 558 points in each of his first three seasons at Yeshiva.
Last season, Samet was the Region 3 and Skyline Conference Player of the Year, and he was a Josten’s Trophy finalist as a sophomore in 2023-24. He’s the active career scoring leader for Division III men’s basketball and the active leader for made three-pointers (314).
