Thomas Kurowski scored a career-high 34 points and the University of Chicago hit eight of its nine foul shots in overtime as the Maroons knocked off No. 2 Emory on Emory's home floor in Atlanta, 80-70 in overtime.
A raucous crowd of 1,895 which was promised cheesesteaks for showing up saw an epic Friday night game in the University Athletic Association in which Emory rallied from a nine-point second half deficit to tie the game at 51. The Eagles (13-2, 3-1 UAA) went on to take a 62-56 lead, and still led by six with two and a half minutes to play.
"Tonight was a game with two teams that played incredibly hard, not always pretty," University of Chicago coach Mike McGrath told D3hoops.com's Ryan Scott after the game. "With three minutes to go, down six, our backs were against the wall and our kids just battled."
Emory missed its last four shots, allowing Chicago (12-3, 3-1) to tie it up on four free throws by Eamonn Kenah and a tip-in by Joe Berry with 21 seconds left. Berry scored the first six points of overtime as well, and Chicago scored the last eight points of the game to close things out.
"Two great teams that competed really well. That's what you get in the UAA," Emory coach Jason Zimmerman told D3hoops.com's Ryan Scott after the game.
Kurowski finished 13-for-24 from the floor and 5-for-11 from three-point range in the win. Chicago held Jair Knight to just 14 points on the night, none of them in overtime, as Logan Shananhan led the Eagles with 19 points.
Jack Stone scored 27 points and Tristan How added 24 points and 13 rebounds as No. 6 NYU went on the road and defeated Carnegie Mellon 96-90. Levi Spina stole Hartwick's inbounds pass to cap it off and seal the win.
Women: Wash U gets back on track
After losing two home games last weekend and dropping out of the Top 25, the WashU Bears got back on the right path as they shot 67% from the floor in winning at the University of Rochester, 86-76. The Bears (11-4, 2-2 UAA) were nearly perfect in the opening quarter of the game, making 16-of-18 shots (89%), scoring a whopping 39 points over the ten-minute period. Rochester (8-7, 1-3) was also solid in the first quarter, putting up 27 points, but saw the hot-shooting Bears go out to a double-digit lead.
Lexy Harris led WashU with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Rochester used an 11-0 run early in the fourth to get within seven points, but Jessica Brooks responded with a three-pointer and the Bears turned it into a 7-0 spurt to hold the Yellowjackets at bay.
Jelena Perovic led all players with 18 points as Union knocked off Liberty League leader Vassar by a 60-49 score in a key conference matchup. The win moves Union (10-6, 7-2) into a tie for second place in the Liberty League with Vassar (11-5, 7-2), just a half-game behind first-place Ithaca. At the midway point of conference play, Union will enter the second half already with wins over both the Bombers and Brewers.
Hanna Malik had a game-high 16 points and Lily Kennedy added 15 on 7-for-9 shooting as Emory got a small measure of revenge in its UAA nightcap, defeating No. 21 Chicago 52-47.
