Preseason women's Top 25: NYU, then who?

Natalie Bruns and NYU will try to become the first team to hold the top spot in our poll for the entire season since Thomas More did it in 2015-16.

Last season New York University almost went wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team in the country. The Violets started the season ranked No. 2, moved into the top spot in our first regular season poll, and then went undefeated.

This season, New York University is almost the unanimous preseason favorite to repeat. Despite graduating three starters, the Violets are the prohibitive favorites to repeat, especially since 2024 Player of the Year Natalie Bruns will use her fifth year of eligibility while doing graduate studies at NYU's Engineering school.

There's more debate who should be ranked right behind NYU. Eight teams received at least one vote for No. 2, and Wartburg edged out Scranton for that distinction. Wartburg returns much of its roster from last season's national semifinalist team while Scranton (which lost to NYU in the quarterfinals) returns 10 players who played at least 10 minutes per game last season.
