A freshman hit his first collegiate 3-pointer at the buzzer and Calvin picked up its second win of the season, improving to 2-0 against Division III teams.

Olivet missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 8.7 seconds left. Calvin pushed the ball up the floor and Uchenna Egekeze was handed the ball high above the key with four seconds remaining. With his primary passing options blocked, Egekeze was forced to take three quick dribbles and launch a fadeaway 3. His shot found nothing but net as the horn sounded, sending his teammates into an uproar.

"The game plan was to set a little flare screen for Thad (Shymanski)," said Egekeze. "I was waiting to hit him on the flare but the pass wasn't there and Sam (LaDuke) was yelling that there were only three seconds left so I had to somehow get a shot up there and it went in. I've always wanted to hit a game-winner and this was my first one so it was a really good feeling seeing it go in."

Olivet fell to 0-5. Egekeze finished with 15 points, while Shymanski scored a game-high 16 on 6-for-21 shooting. Calvin was just 5-for-24 from beyond the arc.

Elsewhere, Salisbury got in its first men's basketball game of the season as the Sea Gulls defeated Virginia Wesleyan 67-58. With a distinct lack of C2C opponents to play in this pandemic season, Salisbury is playing two games with the Marlins, two with St. Mary's (Md.), one with Randolph-Macon, one with Christopher Newport and three with Lancaster Bible. Jordan Oates scored a game-high 23 points and added 15 rebounds in 31 minutes off the bench for the Sea Gulls. Salisbury held Virginia Wesleyan (0-2) to 18% shooting from beyond the arc and held a 40-25 rebounding edge.

Josh Talbert scored a career-high 23 in his first career start as Randolph-Macon won its season opener at Bridgewater (Va.), 74-56. The Yellow Jackets opened the second half on a 19-2 run, as the first seven buckets by Randolph-Macon were all layups. Miles Mallory scored 15 points, 13 of them in the second half. And Northwestern got a measure of revenge for a nearly-60-year-old loss, downing Lakeland 90-62 as Kyle Kaemingk scored 18 points to lead five players scoring in double figures.

Fourteen players got at least 10 minutes, and none had more than 16 as Hope got its women's basketball season started in dominant fashion, rolling past Concordia-Chicago 97-30. Kenedy Schoonveld scored a game-high 18 points for Hope, as the Cougars turned the ball over 47 times, 15 by one player alone.

At the conclusion of play Wednesday night, 71 Division III men's teams have played a game which counted, and 60 women's teams.
