Loras' Ryan DiCanio hit two free throws with one-tenth of a second to play Wednesday to lift his team to a 74-73 upset of third-ranked Augustana at Lillis Court. The setback was the Vikings' first in three outings this year, while the Duhawks remained unbeaten at 4-0.
Nolan Ebel's layup with 3.3 seconds to play (goaltending was called) put Augustana up 73-72 — its first lead since the six-minute mark. Following a timeout, Chrishawn Orange was whistled for a foul just before the buzzer, sending DiCanio to the line. The senior guard hit his first attempt to tie and after another timeout, buried the second to give the Duhawks the victory.
Loras started fast out of the gate. Jackson Kolinski's putback at 15:53 of the first half gave the Duhawks a 12-3 lead, but the Vikings responded with a 13-2 run — capped by six straight points by Pierson Wofford — which gave them their first lead at 16-14.
The rest of the half saw three ties and six lead changes. It ended 41-41 after a DiCanio 3-pointer with 12 seconds left. Augustana shot .519 from the field, including six of 12 3-point tries, while Loras knocked down six of 10 trey attempts and overcame 7-of-20 shooting from inside the arc by hitting all nine of its free throws.
The Duhawks jumped in front again in the second half. A DiCanio three at the 17:04 mark gave them their biggest lead (50-44) of the period, but consecutive Joe Kellen baskets trimmed the margin to two. Orange's layup with 12:27 to play eventually pulled the Vikings even at 53-all and they regained the lead on a Wofford bucket a minute later.
Two Brett Benning free throws with 7:27 left pushed Augustana's lead to 65-59 — its largest of the night — but Rowan McGowen scored five points in a 7-0 Loras run that put the Duhawks back on top. The Vikings would forge ties at 66, 68 and 70, but wouldn't lead again until Ebel's layup with four seconds to play.
Orange and Ebel each scored 14 to lead Augustana. Benning and Wofford added 13 apiece. Orange and Wofford shared the rebounding lead with five each, while Orange had four steals and Ebel five assists. The Vikings shot just .379 from the floor in the second half and missed all four attempts from beyond the arc. In addition, they converted just 17 of 26 (.654) free throw attempts for the game.
McGowen complemented DiCanio's effort with 15 points and Ruggles added 10, along with five assists. DiCanio also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Loras finished the night shooting .400 (24-60) from the field .421 (8-19) from long range and .900 (18-20) from the charity stripe. The Duhawks committed 17 turnovers to 11 for Augustana.
Wednesday marked Loras' first win against a top-five opponent since Nov. 23, 2013 against Illinois Wesleyan, which was ranked No. 2 at the time.
