Medgar Evers College stayed within the City University of New York (CUNY) system for its new head women's basketball coach, hiring Ben Newberg from the Borough of Manhattan Community College to fill the vacancy.

Newberg started his college basketball career while he was an undergraduate student at the University of Albany where he was the student manager for the Great Danes' men's basketball team. His first coaching job was an assistant post SUNY New Paltz and he then had stops at SUNY Sullivan, Mercy College and CCNY.

In 2015 Newberg was hired as the head women's basketball coach at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, which is one of the two-year schools in the the same CUNY system to which Medgar Evers belongs. Newberg coached the Panthers for three seasons and went 38-14 during his last two.

He replaces Delroy Ennis who went 4-72 in three seasons at Medgar Evers. The program has not had a winning season since joining NCAA Division III in 1996 and has won nine games total in the last seven seasons. The Cougars finished 1-24 in 2017-18.

Medgar Evers' head coaching position is part-time. According to the College's release, Newberg is a basketball teacher and athletic director at Success Academy Charter School.
