B.J. Dunne, who was not only the youngest coach in Division III, but the entire NCAA at the time of his hiring, will be moving on. The Vassar head men's basketball coach is slated to become the next head coach at Gettysburg, sources tell Hoopsville.
The sources are not identified because they were not given permission to release the information. The school made the announcement official on April 16.
Dunne, 30, will replace longtime coach George Petrie, who announced his retirement in February. Petrie started at Gettysburg in 1989.
A three-year letterwinner and student assistant coach at Bates, Dunne graduated in 2010. He spent one year as an assistant at Babson and another at Emerson. After one year as an assistant coach at Vassar, Dunne became head coach in 2013-14 and the Brewers immediately surged to a 19-8 finish. That included an appearance in the Liberty League title game, a two-overtime loss to Hobart.
Vassar has been under .500 each of the past four seasons. The Brewers are 53-76 in Dunne's tenure, a .411 winning percentage.
Petrie finished 396-348 in 29 seasons at Gettysburg, including all five of the program's NCAA Tournament appearances. Dunne stands to inherit a program that went 7-18 this past season and loses two seniors.
