Tim Whittle, who has been the head coach of Macalester men's basketball for the past nine seasons, resigned from his position. While the school has not announced the move, Whittle confirmed it in an email to D3hoops.com.
The Scots were 3-22 this past season.
"I put my heart and soul into the program and thought with last year’s success, we could make another step," Whittle wrote." However, seven season ending injuries this year, including four starters took a real toll on the product we put on the court. I am not sure what else we could do to continue to make forward progress."
Whittle came to Macalester for the 2009-10 season, following a successful run as an assistant coach at Division III basketball power Washington University in St. Louis. In each of his final two seasons, the Bears won the Division III men's basketball national championship.
However, Whittle was unable to put the Scots on a winning track. Mac won more than four games just twice in his nine seasons, peaking at a high-water mark of 9-16 in the 2016-17 season. This season, Macalester went 3-22, finishing 35-190, a .156 winning percentage.
Whittle inherited a team that was 0-25.
As a player, Whittle was a four-year letter-winner at Washington U., helping the Bears to a 79-27 record and two NCAA playoff appearances including a 1996 Elite Eight. Whittle received a Master’s in Education degree in 2008 from William Woods University in Fulton, Mo.
