Meredith head basketball coach Melinda Campbell concludes her tenure with the athletics program this month to return as a full-time teaching member of the faculty.
A member of the school's faculty since 1992, Campbell first joined the athletics program as the head tennis coach from 1992-2000. Her team earned the school's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2000 and reached a national ranking on three occasions (1995, 1998, 2000).
The Avenging Angels compiled a 65-160 record (.289) in her tenure.
She began her tenure with the basketball program in 2009 and amassed a career record of 65-160, including 49 USA South Conference wins. Five of her teams advanced to the league tournament, including this year's squad. Her players earned 10 all-conference honors and two All-State selections. Current volunteer assistant coach and alumna-athlete Megan Rahn earned the program's first All-USA South first team award in 2012, and Jessi Hayes followed in 2015. Last week, Kimberly Schuh was named the program's first-ever USA South Women's Basketball Rookie of the Year.
"Coach Campbell has served the college in a variety of roles over the past 20-plus years, and while this role may have been one of her most challenging, it most likely was one of the most enjoyable because of her love for the game of basketball," said athletic director Jackie Myers.
Campbell serves as a professor of health, exercise, and sports science. She served as the department chair from 2000-2009 and helped to develop the exercise and sports science academic major.
"We wish her well as she returns to her role as a full-time member of the faculty," said Myers.
The school will begin the process immediately to find a replacement.
