Fontbonne and Greenville set a new record for combined points scored in a Division III basketball game on Wednesday night when the Griffins outlasted the Panthers 164-154 in overtime. The 318 points breaks the record set when Simpson beat Grinnell 167-148 in 1994.

Kris McCann tied the game for Fontbonne at 143-all by completing a three-point play with 15 seconds left in regulation. Greenville had four shots to win the game in the final six seconds, but missed all of them. Fontbonne made four of its six free throws and Greenville missed all five of its shot attempts in the final minute of regulation.

Greenville employs the same System offense as Grinnell and a handful of other Division III schools that emphasize a high volume of shots, often three pointers, and taking risks on defense that either produce turnovers or open shots for the opponents. On Wednesday night Greenville attempted 139 shots, 79 of them from three, and forced 35 turnovers. Fontbonne shot 71 percent from the field (60-for-85) and only attempted nine 3-pointers.

Three players scored at least 20 points for Fontbonne, led by McCann who had 40 points in 38 minutes. Fontbonne's Luke DeLine finished with a rare triple-double as he tallied 25 points and 16 rebounds, but also had 10 turnovers. All five starters plus four reserves scored double figures for Greenville.

Fontbonne, which is at the bottom of the SLIAC standings, improved to 4-16, 2-11 in the SLIAC while conference leader Greenville slipped to 12-8, 9-4.

The record for combined points in a game across all divisions is held by Loyola Marymount and Alliant International (then known as U.S. International), which combined for 331 in a 181-50 Loyola victory in February 1989. Those two teams also combined for 326 points in 1991.
