The Great Lakes Invitational lived up to its name as host Marietta beat St. Thomas 85-83 in overtime in the exciting finale of the weekend event.

After a back-and-forth second half, Marietta opened up a five-point lead on St. Thomas with 1:39 to play in regulation. Tommies' forward Ryan Boll answered with a three-point play and a layup on consecutive possessions to send the game to overtime where the teams continued to exchange leads. St. Thomas led 83-82 with 30 seconds to play when Marietta called timeout. Out of the break the Pioneers found DeVaughn Wingard who converted a three-point play with nine seconds left to put Marietta back in front 85-83. St. Thomas missed the potential game-tying shot at the buzzer and Marietta completed a 2-0 weekend.
Marietta used a balanced scoring attack with five players posting double-figures, led by Anthony Wallace with 22. Ryan Boll was a one-man wrecking crew for St. Thomas as he rolled up 39 points and 11 rebounds in 43 minutes. Boll had 26 field goal attempts, just one less than the Tommies' other four starters combined.
Earlier in the day at the Great Lakes Invitational, Hope upended No. 19 St. John Fisher 97-86. The Flying Dutchmen's reserves outscored St. John Fisher's 55-25 and Riley Lewis scored a career-high 26 for Hope (1-1). Recap
No. 9 Washington U. topped No. 6 Tufts 98-94 in the finale of the Bears' season opening tournament. Kevin Kucera scored 21 points and Matt Highsmith and Andrew Sanders added 20 apiece for Washington U. Box score
Randolph-Macon rolled over No. 5 Ramapo 79-61 in the opening game of Marymount's weekend tournament. The Roadrunners struggled to score in their season opener, shooting just 33 percent (20-for-60) and 1-for-13 from three. Randolph-Macon got 43 points from its reserves, including a career-high 18 points from Corey Bays.
No. 10 UW-River Falls narrowly avoided an 0-2 weekend when the Falcons edged DePauw 72-69 in overtime at the Lee Pfund Classic. Austin Moldenhauer's game-tying three with four seconds left in regulation rescued River Falls, sending the game to overtime where the Falcons prevailed. No. 15 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was not as fortunate as the Stags fell to UW-Platteville 74-57. Claremont played without preseason All-American Michael Scarlett in both losses this weekend.
No. 20 St. John's struck a blow for Division III pride by beating Division II St. Cloud State, 73-67. Tyler Weiss led four Johnnies in double-figure scoring with 18 points. St. John's has won three of its last four games against the Huskies.
All-American Connor Raridon returned to the court for No. 12 North Central (Ill.) after suffering a season-ending injury a year ago, but it wasn't enough for the Cardinals. Heidelberg outlasted North Central 98-93 in double-overtime, thanks to 31 points from Kiere Bennie and 24 from Chris Moxley. Raridon scored 12 points in 36 minutes.
Aaron McFarland scored 27 points in his season debut for No. 14 Christopher Newport and the Captains needed all of them to rally past Catholic, 80-78. In a battle of preseason All-Americans Cam Wiley outscored Jaqhawn Walters 26-21 and No. 25 Swarthmore handled Albertus Magnus, 95-85.
Ursinus' Eric Williams, Jr. shot 12-for-20 from three and the Bears cruised past New Rochelle 111-85. Grinnell's Sean Cullinane did him four better, shooting 15-for-20 from three in the Pioneers' 153-115 walk over Lincoln Christian. Ty Nichols reached the 1,000-pont career milestone in Keene State's 73-66 win over Plattsburgh State.
