Mount St. Vincent announced that James Mooney, who is the College's career scoring leader in men's basketball, will be its next head coach and associate athletic director. The men's head coaching job was vacated when the College removed its head men's and women's coach and athletic director in January.
Director of Athletics and Recreation Barima Yeboah announced the hiring on Monday.
"I am very happy to welcome James as the Associate Director of Athletics and Head Men's Basketball Coach," said Mr. Yeboah in the College's release. "James will be a positive impact on our student-athletes and help them reach their highest potential."
Mooney played at Mount St. Vincent where he was one of the program's most prolific scorers. He holds the career records for points, made three-pointers and made field goals. As a senior in 2005-2006, Mooney scored 26.8 points per game, which was fifth in the country, and made 4.4 three-pointers per game, which was third in the country. He also finished in the top 10 for steals.
After graduating from the College in 2006, Mooney spent one season as an assistant coach at Mount St. Vincent and the last two years as the head coach at Rye Neck High School in Mamaroneck, N.Y.
"I am excited for the opportunity to not only coach at the collegiate level, which has been a goal of mine since I began coaching, but to do so at my alma mater," said Mr. Mooney in the release. "I fully embrace the challenges that my role entails, but as the ultimate competitor, I will find a way to succeed at a high level."
Mooney replaces Brian Nigro who was let go midway through the 2016-17 season. Thomas Tibbs coached the team on an interim basis for the final eight games of the season.
The Dolphins finished 7-18, 5-11 in the Skyline.
