After four long years, Mary Baldwin was able to celebrate a win on Saturday.

The Mary Baldwin basketball team defeated Wesleyan (Ga.) 43-42 on Saturday afternoon in a USA South matchup.

The Fighting Squirrels jumped out to a 11-2 lead after the first quarter then battled in the second quarter to take a 30-21 lead into the half.

The home team came back in the third quarter outscoring Mary Baldwin 16-8 to pull to within one point. The final period proved to be a defensive struggle and Mary Baldwin walked away with the win.

Mary Baldwin's last win came on Feb. 11, 2012, when the Fighting Squirrels defeated Meredith 89-87. Mary Baldwin lost the next 106 games.

Anna Ramirez led all scorers with 15 points. Kaitlyn Crews followed closely with 12 and Khai Davidson added nine points and nine rebounds. Nicole Blackburn also grabbed nine boards for the Fighting Squirrels.

After the game, coach Andrew Stephens said, "Today is a great day for our basketball program. We showed some toughness at a challenging place to play. This is a sign of progress. We just have to keep working hard to get where we want to be."
