In protest over the firing of head men's basketball coach Jose Rebimbas, the William Paterson men's basketball team walked off the floor on Tuesday night and refused to play its scheduled New Jersey Athletic Conference game vs. Ramapo.
A video posted to Instagram appears to show the team taking off its warmups after the announcement of the starting lineup, leaving the shirts on the floor. A player delivered a statement to the press table and the entire team walked off the floor.
When asked for comment, the WPU athletic department's statement read, in full: "William Paterson forfeited the Nov. 24 home men's basketball contest against Ramapo." However, it's not clear as to whether the NCAA will recognize it as a forfeit, sources told D3hoops.com on Tuesday night.
Rebimbas, who was in his 21st season as head coach of the Pioneers, announced via Facebook on Saturday that he had been relieved of his coaching duty. Rebimbas was 384-168 with the Pioneers, with nine trips to the NCAA Tournament, two to the Division III Final Four and a berth in the 2001 Division III men's basketball national title game.
Brian Chapman, who was an assistant under Rebimbas for the past 20 seasons, was listed as acting head coach. The Pioneers' next scheduled game is Saturday, Nov. 28, vs. Rosemont at Cabrini College.
