Recap: Beating the holiday rush

On the last relatively full day of Division III basketball before the holiday break, a handful of teams put themselves on the "nice" list, led by the Marietta men and Eastern women.

No. 24 Marietta defeated John Carroll 82-68 and claimed sole possession of first place in the OAC. The Pioneers hit 16 three-pointers and shot better behind the arc (44 percent) than in front of it (38 percent). RaNeal Ewing and Luis Garcia each made five three-pointers. Recap

Marietta finishes the first semester 10-0, 5-0 in conference. John Carroll drops one game back at 4-1, 5-2 overall.

No. 6 St. Thomas also shot well from three when it needed to, and the Tommies fended off No. 20 UW-Stevens Point, 68-66. Cortez Tillman hit two critical threes in the final two minutes for St. Thomas. The Tommies' top six players combined for an incredible 63 points, 21 rebounds, 16 assists and no turnovers.

No. 1 Washington U. picked up its 16th straight road victory with a 88-78 win in Cedar Rapids over Coe. The Bears shot 51 percent from the floor and 93 percent from the foul line. KJ Evans reached the 1,000 point plateau and No. 3 UW-Whitewater squashed Kalamazoo, 89-53.

Hope defeated Mount Union 79-71 in a game where the teams combined for 78 points in the paint. The Flying Dutchmen's center Brock Benson led the way with 19 points. Done Logan caught fire for Carthage late in the game and rallied the Red Men past Lake Forest, 67-65.

In the Puerto Rico Clasico opener, Eastern shut down No. 10 Williams and knocked the Ephs from the ranks of the unbeaten, 51-40. Meghan Nowak picked up her seventh double-double of the season for the Eagles. Recap

Maryville's All-American got the better of Transylvania's All-American and her team did the same. Mackenzie Puckett scored 19 points to Nicole Coffman's 10 and the Scots handed the 16th ranked Pioneers' their first loss, 74-59

No. 11 George Fox built a 54-20 halftime lead against Wheaton (Mass.) and cruised to an 87-50 victory in Hawaii.

Baldwin-Wallace improved to 4-1 in the OAC by stifling Wilmington, 55-29. The Quakers shot 23 percent from the floor and nine percent (1-for-11) from three. The Yellow Jackets didn't shoot much better from behind the arc (4-for-22).

In the American Southwest Conference, Concordia (Texas) stunned Louisiana College 73-67. The Tornadoes entered the game with one win while Louisiana College sat just outside the Top 25.
