Stormy weather forced some teams to cancel their road trips on Saturday. Upset losses probably have other teams wishing they cancelled their games, too.

No. 1 Amherst played from behind most of the afternoon at Emerson and the Lions held off the top-ranked Lord Jeffs, 90-79. The Lord Jeffs trailed Emerson most of the game, but trimmed the Lions' lead to one midway through the second half. The Lions called time out to regroup and then Michael Thorpe scored 10 straight points to build back Emerson's lead. Thorpe finished with 26 points for Emerson and Jon Goldberg added a double-double (15 points, 13 rebounds). Box score

No. 4 UW-Whitewater opened conference play with a road loss as UW-Stout topped the Warhawks 74-69. Much like Emerson did against Amherst, UW-Stout led for most of the game. Alex Oman scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half for the Devils, who have a seven-game win streak for the first time since 2005-2006.

The upset bug also bit No. 20 Hampden-Sydney. The Tigers lost at Bridgewater (Va.) 65-57, where the Eagles turned 17 Hampden-Sydney turnovers into 22 points.

No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan dominated its Top 10 showdown with No. 8 Washington U, as the Titans dropped the Bears 98-73. Illinois Wesleyan outrebounded the visitors by 14, outscored them in the paint by 14 and got 43 points from its reserves.

No. 9 Calvin bounced back from a disappointing loss by drubbing No. 13 Wheaton (Ill.), 78-51. After losing to Carthage on Friday night, the Knights quickly took command against the Thunder  Saturday afternoon. Calvin held Wheaton (Ill.) to one field goal in the final 10 minutes of the first half. Hope dropped Carthage 80-58 in the other game at the CCIW/MIAA challenge, sending each of the four teams home with one win and one loss.

No. 6 Wooster stayed perfect in the NCAC and overall with a 64-48 win over No. 24 DePauw. Dan Fanelly had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Scots who held the Tigers to 29 percent shooting from the field.

No. 18 St. Norbert battled back from an 11-point deficit at Grinnell and beat the Pioneers 121-115 in overtime. No. 25 Purchase State dominated its undefeated showdown against Farmingdale State, 77-57.

Ryan Hicks scored 39 points to keep Defiance rolling past Mount St. Joseph, 72-64. The Yellow Jackets are 6-0, 2-0 in the HCAC.

Women's recap

York (Pa.) welcomed No. 15 Christopher Newport to its new conference with a 75-63 win over the Captains. Saturday's game was Christopher Newport's first as a member of the Capital Athletic Conference after the Captains moved there from the USA South Athletic Conference.

York hit eight three-pointers in the first half and used its usual stingy defense to build a 52-36 lead. But Christopher Newport answered with a full court press that fueled a 27-9 run and propelled the Captains back in front briefly, 63-61. Kristen Haley responded to pull York even at 63 and then Haley scored again off a series of offensive rebounds to give the Spartans the lead for good.

York senior forward Brittany Hicks had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Aja Wallpher added 12 assists in 38 minutes. We spoke with the teammates after the win, which pushes York's record to 8-0.

The other two contenders for the CAC crown also played each other, and Marymount defeated Mary Washington 54-45.

No. 2 Washington U. took care of Trinity (Texas) 67-59 to win the McWilliams Classic. The Bears only shot 34 percent from the field, but they outrebounded the Tigers by 20 and made 19 of 24 free throws.

No. 19 Wheaton (Ill.) defeated Roosevelt, which is ranked fifth in the NAIA Division II poll, 91-79.

John Carroll continued its impressive start as the Blue Streaks ran past No. 11 Ohio Northern 73-58. Melissa Spahar took more than a third of John Carroll's shots, and she made more than enough of them on her way to scoring 26 points on 12 for 24 shooting in 37 minutes. The Blue Streaks are 5-0, 2-0 in the OAC.

Moravian started conference play with a 71-59 victory at No. 23 Juniata. Katie O'Rourke led the Greyhounds in points (17), rebounds (nine) and assists (six).

Elizabethtown will be joining those teams in the Landmark Conference next year but, for now, the Blue Jays are the lone undefeated team in the Commonwealth Conference. Elizabethtown defeated Messiah 73-69 to improve to 6-0, 3-0 in conference.
