Mary Washington defeated No. 10 Virginia Wesleyan 95-87 in double overtime to grab its second win over a ranked team in five days. The Eagles held a 13-point lead midway through the second half before Virginia Wesleyan started its rally. The Marlins held the Eagles without a field goal for the final three minutes of regulation and DJ Woodmore hit a game-tying three pointer with 15 seconds left. Colby Heard started the second overtime with a jump shot to give Virginia Wesleyan the lead, but the Marlins didn't score again. Three Mary Washington starters played more than 40 minutes, led by Reister who scored 29 points in 47 minutes. The Eagles are now 8-1 with their lone loss a one-point defeat at Hampden-Sydney in the first week of the season. Virginia Wesleyan slipped to 7-2.
Albright had several chances to defeat Franklin and Marshall, but the Diplomats kept fighting back and eventually won 95-92 in double overtime. Matt Porter had 26 points for Franklin and Marshall, including six in the second overtime and a key three-pointer in the first to keep the Diplomats in the game. Pedro Perez had 28 points and 11 rebounds for the Lions.
Maryville (Tenn.) shot 59 percent from the field and 56 percent from three in a 109-102 double-overtime victory over Capital. Oscar Butler played 40 minutes off the bench for the Scots, scored 24 points and led the team in rebounds and assists. AJ Dixon had 37 points for Capital. Box score
No. 17 Guilford continued its flair for the dramatic and stayed undefeated by beating North Carolina Wesleyan 87-78 in overtime. Quaker freshman Alston Furr hit six of seven three points shots and scored 22 points. Josh Morrison had 35 for the Battling Bishops.
No. 2 Wooster picked up its first loss of the season at the hands of Arizona Christian, 62-60. The Firestorm are ranked sixth in the most recent NAIA Division I poll.
Women's recap
It's been a rough first semester for Coe so far, but the Kohawks picked up a nice victory before the Christmas break on Tuesday night. Coe improved to 3-5 with a 78-66 win at No. 16 Carthage. The Kohawks took 32 free throws and nearly made all of them, converting 30 chances for a 94 percent shooting percentage.
No. 11 Montclair State has rebounded well from last week's loss at Vassar. The Red Hawks pounded 2013 NCAA tournament participant Marymount 71-47 on Sunday and then defeated Landmark Conference preseason favorite Moravian 69-51 tonight. Janitza Aquino scored a career-high 29 points and Melissa Tobie added 22 for Montclair State.
