Bethany Lutheran announces the hiring of Greg Holzhueter as the new head men’s basketball coach.

Holzhueter has been with the Vikings for the past two seasons working as the lead assistant and recruiting coordinator under David Balza. Bethany Lutheran reached the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference championship game in each of those years which included the program’s first regular season UMAC title in 2011-12.

Balza left recently to become head coach at Palm Beach Atlantic, a Division II school. The Vikings were 28-25 in his two seasons.

“I’m very excited to be named head coach and I’m ready to get to work. The prospect to serve at a college like Bethany provides me the tremendous opportunity to positively affect the lives of young men both on and off the court,” said Holzhueter. “We lost our top six guys in terms of minutes played last season so I’m excited to call recruits as soon as possible.”

Holzhueter, a Mankato native, was a 2011 graduate of Martin Luther. In his time at MLC, Holzhueter was a four-year starter in basketball, football and baseball, receiving all-conference recognition in all three sports.

In basketball, Holzhueter was a three-time First Team All-UMAC selection, finishing his career for the Knights with 1,191 points and MLC records in assists, steals, and free throws made. He also helped lead the Knights to the 2008-09 UMAC regular season championship.

“Greg has worked hard and been instrumental in the success that we have had over the past couple of seasons,” said Bethany athletic director Karl Fager. “He has built great relationships with our team and our recruits, he believes in and reflects our mission, and has a strong desire to maintain the program at the highest level. Greg is an up and coming young coach that has a bright future in front of him. I am looking forward to working with Greg for many years to come.”

In addition to his new head coaching responsibilities at Bethany, Holzhueter will continue to serve the residential life department as a resident manager.
