Saturday wrap: Mount falls at Witt's end

Wittenberg stunned No. 2 Mount Union 61-60 on a last-second foul shot at the Charles B. Zimmerman Classic.

Wittenberg hosted No. 2 Mount Union in the championship game of its holiday tournament. Mount Union erased a nine-point halftime deficit and took a 58-54 lead with 3:38 left. But the Tigers held the Purple Raiders scoreless for more than three minutes and took the lead back at 60-58. After Marybeth Leitch tied the game for Mount Union, Wittenberg sophomore guard Enri Small was fouled with one second remaining. She made the first free throw to give the Tigers the win.

Wittenberg (5-6) won its second straight after entering the holiday break with a three-game losing streak. Mount Union (10-2) dropped its second game in three tries.

Elsewhere No. 1 DePauw kept rolling along with a win over nearby rival Rose-Hulman 79-36. MAC Commonwealth champion Lebanon Valley beat MAC Freedom champion Misericordia 76-67. Kiely Chaklos scored 27 points for the 13th ranked Flying Dutchmen. No. 19 Southern Maine overpowered D'Youville 75-55 to improve to 10-0.

No. 12 York (Pa.) held off Wheaton (Mass.) 55-54 to keep its perfect record in tact. Brittany Hicks scored 18 and grabbed eight boards in 38 minutes for the Spartans (9-0). No. 7 Hope cruised past Baldwin-Wallace 82-58.

New York University honored the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting before the game and then rallied past Skidmore 66-63 behind a near triple-double from Sandy Hook native Riley Wurtz. She had 20 points, nine rebounds and nine assists for the Violets.

Juniata rolled over King's 80-61 in a matchup of 2012 NCAA tournament teams. Jordan Speck's 17-point effort helped end the Eagles' modest two-game losing streak.
