2013 men's tourney will spread out

NCAA logo The one-year NCAA Tournament format in play for Division III men’s basketball for 2013 will have one key factor involved: waiting.

With the 2013 national championship game scheduled to take place Sunday, April 7, in conjunction with the Division I Final Four in Atlanta, as originally announced in May, the rest of the tournament schedule had an opportunity to be spaced out diferently. The way the NCAA chose to schedule the tournament was different than the Division III men’s basketball championships committee’s pereference. It will run as follows:

Selection “Sunday” will take place as usual, on Monday, Feb. 25. First-round games will be played on Saturday, March 2. Second-round games will be played a week later, on Saturday, March 9. The Sweet 16 will be played on Saturday, March 16, with the national quarterfinals and semifinals on March 22-23 in Salem.

The schedule still needs the approval of the Division III Presidents Council. More on the change from NCAA.com. The committtee had hoped to give every team a week off at the beginning of the tournament, which would make sure teams are rested and that travel to the first-round home sites would be made easier.

Ohio Wesleyan coach Mike DeWitt, the incoming chair of the Division III men’s basketball championship committee, spoke with Hoopsville’s Dave McHugh about the format: “There were so many positives and negatives to both tournament formats that it’s going to be an adjustment no matter what. We’ll run the tournament given the way we’re told and hopefully it will be a good experience for everybody.”
