Led by 21 points from junior Tyler Schmidt and 14 points from
sophomore Parker Hines, the Augsburg men's basketball team claimed
a 74-68 victory over NCAA Division I opponent Houston Baptist in an
exhibition game on Saturday evening at HBU's Sharp Gym.
Augsburg connected on 21 of 26 from the free-throw line, while
hitting 24 of 53 (45.3 percent) from the field, including five of
11 from three-point range, in scoring the exhibition victory over
the Division I opponent. Houston Baptist was limited to 8-of-15
shooting from the free-throw line.
For Augsburg coach Aaron Griess, it's his third victory over a
Division I opponent. As head coach at Division II Chaminade, his
teams scored wins over Division I foes Villanova (2003) and Coastal
Carolina (2004). It's the second exhibition win by a D-III over a
D-I program in as many nights, following Carthage's win at Northern Illinois on Friday
night.
In addition to his team-high 21 points, Schmidt connected on three
of four shots from three-point range and went 8-for-8 from the
free-throw line, also contributing three assists and three steals.
Hines had six assists, while also going 8-for-9 from the free-throw
line.
Senior Andy Grzesiak-Grimm claimed 10 points and two rebounds,
while classmate Cory Polta had nine points and two rebounds for the
Auggies. Sophomore Andy Seidlitz had eight points and hit two
3-pointers, and senior Brett Sorenson had seven points, three
rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Noah Veach led the Auggies with
four rebounds.
